NEW DELHI: The Delhi Assembly‘s Budget session on Monday passed resolutions applauding the Indian cricket team for winning the Champions Trophy and recognising NASA astronaut Sunita Williams‘ safe return to Earth after a nine-month mission at the International Space Station.
India made history by becoming the only nation to clinch the Champions Trophy three times, securing victory against New Zealand in the final on 9 March.
Reading out a resolution, Assembly speaker Vijender Gupta said, “I extend a hearty congratulation to Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma and other players for this achievement.” He also expressed appreciation for International Cricket Council chairman Jay Shah for successfully organising the tournament.
The Assembly also recognised Sunita Williams’ safe return, acknowledging her resilience during her extended stay in space. “I congratulate Sunita Williams and the other astronauts for their safe return and appreciate their courage,” Gupta stated, adding that NASA’s efforts were also commendable.
Williams, along with astronauts Nick Hague and Butch Wilmore, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, returned to Earth last week aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which landed in the sea off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida.
Their mission lasted over nine months due to unforeseen delays.
