Hi Reader,
We’re back with the third documentary in our special 10th-anniversary series, handpicked from some of The Quint’s archives which showcase the stories which still matter today. This time, we’re diving into Uttarakhand: The Making Of A ‘Hindu-Only’ Devbhoomi, a film that unfolds a disturbing trend.
In Uttarakhand, a troubling pattern has been seen emerging, one that seeks to redefine the state as an exclusive “Hindu-only” land, at the cost of its Muslim residents.
In Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura area, authorities demolished a madrasa. Six people were shot dead in the violence that followed. A few days later, Munif Khatun, a local resident, returned from a neighbour’s house only to see her home, recently refurbished for her son’s wedding, turned into debris.
Meanwhile, in Purola, two men, Jitendra and Ubaid, were accused of attempting to abduct a minor Hindu girl, and a Love Jihad narrative was spun out of thin air. What followed was a complete economic and social boycott of the local Muslim community. Posters went up overnight, warning Muslims to leave.
At The Quint, we believe in bringing these uncomfortable truths to light. Because staying silent is not an option.
