Following some incidents of intimidation of Himachal taxi operators by some miscreants in Amritsar, All Himachal Commercial Vehicles Joint Action Committee has taken up the matter with taxi unions of Amritsar and the Amritsar police.
“We have met the taxi unions of Amritsar regarding the issue and these unions have assured us their support,” said Rajinder Thakur, president of All Himachal Commercial Vehicles Joint Action Committee. Thakur further said the committee also submitted a memorandum to the Amritsar police, seeking action against the miscreants and ensure the safety of the taxi drivers. “The Police have assured us all help and support,” said Thakur.
The representatives of the taxi operators from Himachal were forced to go to Amritsar and meet the taxi unions following some miscreants threatening the Himachal taxi operators to not pick passengers from Amritsar. “Our peak season is round the corner, and any such incidents will hit our business. So, we went there to ensure that our taxis could go play there without any fear,” said Thakur.
It may be mentioned here that some HRTC buses were defaced and damaged at various places in Punjab in retaliation to altercation between the youths coming from Punjab to Manikaran and the local people a few days back. The local people had objected to some youth displaying the posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale on their motorcycles. Following the defacement of buses, HRTC has suspended as many as 20 routes to various parts of Punjab.
Thakur, however, made it clear that the incidents they had raised with the Amritsar Police were not connected with this particular issue. “In our case, some miscreants had threatened our taxi drivers to not operate in Amritsar. And we are sure that it will not happen again as both the police and the taxi unions have assured us of support,” said Thakur.
