The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress were at each other’s throats on the occasion of BR Ambedkar Jayanti on Monday as they traded accusations of disrespecting the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’.

While the BJP shared a dramatised video to depict how Congress marginalised Dr Ambedkar after independence and “forced him to resign from the Nehru government”, the Congress shared a “letter” by Ambedkar to allege that it was Veer Savarkar who “ensured” his defeat in the election.

Politics On Ambedkar Jayanti

The BJP shared a 2.50-minute dramatic video, showing the characters of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr Ambedkar. The exchange between the two leaders depicted how the latter expressed his discontent with Nehru’s policies and warned how they could lead to challenges in Kashmir, Bengal, and Punjab.

“Why did Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar resign from Nehru’s cabinet… watch this full film!” the BJP posted on X.

Congress Hits Back With Ambedkar Letter

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge read out a letter by Dr Ambedkar dated 18.01.1952 and alleged that Savarkar and Hindu Mahasabha were the ones who wanted to defeat him.

“There was a clear plot. The plot to defeat me was hatched by Dange and Savarkar. Babasaheb himself wrote that Savarkar was involved in ensuring his defeat. These were the very people who wanted to defeat him — including the Hindu Mahasabha. Their intention was to make sure Babasaheb lost from a reserved seat. He wrote this letter to clarify the truth to his friends. Perhaps Modi ji should read this letter,” Kharge said as he read out a purported letter.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge said that the BJP did not support Dr Ambedkar.

“When Babasaheb was alive, they did not support him. When Babasaheb adopted Buddhism, they said that Buddhists had become untouchables. Who are these people to make such statements? Their party was the Republican Party. At that time, the Hindu Mahasabha was against Babasaheb,” Kharge said.

Earlier today, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar and said that his struggle for Indian democracy will guide the party in the “fight to uphold the Constitution”.

“Respectful tributes to Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, on his birth anniversary. His struggle and contribution—for strengthening the nation’s democracy, for equal rights of every Indian, and for representation of every section of society—will always guide us in the fight to uphold the Constitution,” he posted on X.
