Panic gripped residents of Nurpur town last evening when strong tremor-like shocks were felt thrice within 20 minutes, causing people to rush out of their homes and shops. Windows and doors rattled, and many feared it was an earthquake. However, the tremors were experienced only in areas adjacent to the under-construction Bodh-Badni bypass, part of the Kandwal–Bhedkhud phase of the Pathankot-Mandi highway widening project.
According to reports, some kutcha houses in Bodh developed cracks, raising serious concerns about the impact of blasting operations in the area.
Alert residents, suspecting the use of strong Class A explosives for rock blasting, immediately informed local SDM Gursimar Singh and the DSP. Responding swiftly, the SDM contacted the construction company’s local contractor and ordered an immediate halt to all blasting activities to ensure public safety.
Residents demanded a complete ban on the use of banned detonators in the area, citing risks to lives and property.
Speaking to The Tribune, SDM Gursimar Singh confirmed that the contractor has been directed to use only permissible explosives and strictly follow safety protocols. The administration has also sought a detailed report from the contractor outlining the safety measures being undertaken at the construction site.
He acknowledged that Class A explosives, known for their high risk of accidental detonation, are banned for such operations and assured that their use will not be permitted under any circumstances.
