CAG report: Discrepancies in city’s waste mgmt data

Mumbai: The CAG report on waste management in urban local bodies (ULBs) pointed out discrepancies in the data provided by the director of the Swachh Maharashtra Mission and the BMC regarding solid waste generation, collection and treatment for 2021-22.
While the director reported that 9,841.32 tonne of waste was collected daily, the BMC data indicated 6,228 tonne was collected out of the 6,514 tonne of solid waste generated each day, with 5,829 tonne being treated. Meanwhile, the Swachh Maharashtra Mission found that only 6,213 tonne of the 9,841 tonne generated daily was collected, and just 4,870 tonne treated.
The BMC was among eight urban local bodies whose data showed significant variation compared to the figures submitted by the director of the Swachh Maharashtra Mission.
The report further mentioned that the collection of segregated municipal solid waste is an essential step in municipal solid waste management. “Inefficient waste collection services have an impact on public health and aesthetics of towns and cities,” stated the report.
Mumbai generates over 8,000 metric tonne of garbage daily. tnn
