NEW DELHI: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra failed to appear before Mumbai Police for the third time on Saturday in connection with a case over his alleged “traitor” jibe at Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, officials said.
The Khar police had summoned Kamra to appear on April 5, but he skipped the notice once again. A team from Khar police had earlier visited his residence in Mahim after he missed the second summons.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, accusing Kamra of making defamatory remarks against Shinde during a comedy show. Kamra had also released a video satirizing Shinde over the Shiv Sena split, which reportedly triggered party workers to vandalise the studio and hotel premises in Mumbai on March 23.
Kamra, who is a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, has been granted interim anticipatory bail by the Madras high court till April 7.
Meanwhile, three FIRs registered against him in Nashik Rural, Jalgaon and Nandgaon have been transferred to Khar police, where the main case is being handled.
Police said further action will depend on Kamra’s response to the latest summons and directions from the court.
