New Delhi: A constable was shot by criminals during an encounter in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar. Police said the incident occurred on Friday around 12 am when they received information about the movement of two men involved in an armed robbery hiding in Tilak Nagar. When the police team arrived, the suspects opened fire. The constable was hit by a bullet in the hand and abdomen. Police said they have apprehended the two.
The duo were part of a group who robbed a man of his money on March 21 by brandishing firearms and threatening the victim in Sultanpuri. Police said that during the investigation, one of the accused was apprehended as he posted a picture with a firearm on social media. “He was nabbed, and during questioning, confessed to his involvement in the robbery,” police said.
On Friday, police said they received a tip off regarding the movements of two suspects involved in the robbery case in the Tilak Nagar area. After verifying the information, the team approached the location.
At 12 am, upon sensing police presence, the criminals tried to flee. Team members, constable Sandeep and head constable Vikas, pursued two of them for about 400 metres. One criminal opened fire twice at the police team. “In self-defence, police personnel returned fire. Sandeep sustained gunshot injuries to the abdomen and left hand. He is currently stable and safe and undergoing treatment at the hospital,” deputy commissioner of police (outer) Sachin Sharma said. A bike used by the criminals to flee was also recovered. Further legal action is being taken, and the investigation is ongoing.
In another incident, a 25-year-old criminal, identified as Akash Jha, was shot in the leg after exchanging fire with police in West Delhi’s Vikaspuri on Friday.
DCP (west) Vichitra Veer said Akash was arrested in a firing case in Mayapuri in 2024 and released from jail in Nov 2024. “Recently, there were complaints that he was roaming around the area to extort money but no one came forward to file a formal complaint,” the DCP said.
During the investigation, police found Akash’s hideout in Indira Camp No-5, Vikaspuri. When the police team raided the premises around 1.30 am on Friday, Akash opened fire, hitting one of the officers’ bulletproof jackets. In self-defence, the police fired back, hitting Akash in the left leg, just below the knee. He was immediately taken to hospital for treatment. Akash has been involved in multiple cases of robbery, firing, and assault, and is reportedly wanted in a Gunda Act case by Gautam Budh Nagar (UP) police station.
