NEW DELHI: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced that special assembly sessions inspired by the life of Dr BR Ambedkar will be held across Delhi schools to help students connect with his thoughts, struggles, and contributions.
“Ambedkar was a hero for the entire nation, not just one community. His ideals must reflect in our actions. We must embrace his ideas beyond political boundaries,” Gupta said while addressing a gathering on Ambedkar Jayanti.
The announcement came during a walkathon held to mark the occasion, which saw participation from thousands of school children, youth, and social organisations. Cabinet ministers Ashish Sood and Ravindra Indraj Singh were also present. “This walkathon is a powerful medium to spread Ambedkar’s vision of justice, equality, and rights,” she added.
The CM said that all Delhi schools will hold special assemblies focused on Ambedkar’s life to inspire the younger generation. In addition, various student programmes and awareness campaigns will be organised in educational institutions to spread his message.
Addressing the crowd, Gupta said Ambedkar remains immortal in the hearts of people and that his birth anniversary is now celebrated globally with deep respect. “Calling him the architect of India’s destiny is no exaggeration,” she said. “He studied constitutions from around the world to draft one that was inclusive, visionary, and enduring.”
“The fact that 1.4 billion people live under one Constitution with equal rights and duties is a testament to his vision. Indians are fortunate to have a visionary, thinker, and constitution-maker like him, who showed the path to a strong democracy based on equality, liberty, and justice,” she said.
She praised Ambedkar for his fight against social evils, saying, “If anyone led Indian society from darkness to light, it was him. He defined citizens’ rights and duties clearly. He was not a hero for a particular caste or community but for the whole country.”
Taking a swipe at political exploitation of Ambedkar’s legacy, she urged citizens to rise above such divisions and uphold his ideals to build a just and progressive India.
Gupta also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving Ambedkar the national recognition he deserves. “Celebrating his birth anniversary at the national level and declaring it a public holiday are strong messages. We are remembering our true heroes,” she said.
The CM concluded by announcing that Ambedkar Jayanti will now be celebrated over a fortnight in Delhi, with programmes dedicated to promoting his values among the youth.
