New Delhi: A father-son duo was arrested for staging the son’s death to fraudulently to claim Rs 1 crore in insurance money, in what police described as a “dead man walking” case.
TOI earlier reported that the conspiracy was uncovered during a routine investigation into an alleged road accident reported on March 5 at Najafgarh police station. The father, identified as Satish, informed police that his 27-year-old son, Gagan, was hit by a bike and received first aid at a hospital. However, when police asked Gagan for a written statement and medical examination, he left the station and never returned.
Six days later, on March 11, Satish called the investigating officer and claimed that Gagan died on March 6 and was already cremated in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, without a post-mortem. He also requested the police register an FIR related to the accident and filed a complaint against the IO.
“Something seemed off, and we began a deeper probe,” said DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh. “CCTV footage revealed that the accident was staged, with Gagan himself acting in coordination with the biker, later identified as Manish. Under interrogation, Manish revealed that the plan was masterminded by advocate Manmohan alias Pardeep, who helped the duo fake Gagan’s death to evade loan liabilities and claim insurance.”
The trio promised Manish Rs 15 lakh for his role in the scheme.
The twist came when cremation ground records showed no cremation. Instead, Gagan was seen on CCTV donating money there and walking away casually, said police.
A case of forgery and conspiracy was registered, and the father and the son were arrested following a detailed investigation. During interrogation, they revealed the motive was financial gain.
