Ghibli art craze rising, police warn people of identity theft – The Tribune

At a time when Ghibli art craze has taken over social media by storm, the Himachal Pradesh cyber cell has warned the people to be careful as the trend may lead to instances such as identity theft, thus compromising the safety of the person.

As per the state cyber cell, many AI art generators claim broad rights over uploaded photos, including commercial use and redistribution of the photos used to be converted in Ghibli-style artwork.

DIG, State CID (Cybercrime), Mohit Chawla said that Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered apps could transform the pictures of a person into a stunning Ghibli-style artwork that has attracted the attention of the people. He said that while these images make good profile pictures and are being shared on social media for fun, these images also pose severe risks that could compromise the privacy of the individual.

“These AI platforms can store, share or sell the facial features and metadata which could lead to identity theft and deepfake videos. It has been noticed that most users agree to the term of services and conditions that allow platforms to retain as well as to use the images indefinitely even after the deletion of the shared photos. Therefore, people need to be vigilant while sharing such pictures as people might hand over more than they could realize in exchange of a cool avatar,” he said.

“People are requested to not to share their photos or any other personal or financial details on any platform as it can make them an easy target of cyber criminals,” he added.
