Ram Navami 2025 puja guide: Easy step-by-step instructions to perform puja at home

Ram Navami, which honours the birth of Lord Rama, is a deeply revered celebration. In 2025, this sacred day falls on April 6. It presents a beautiful opportunity for families to come together and perform the puja at home with devotion and simplicity.

Ram Navami 2025 – Puja Muhurat

Lord Rama was born during midday (Madhyahna), which is considered the most auspicious time for the puja.
In 2025, the best puja muhurat is from 11:36 AM to 1:39 PM IST.

Step-by-Step Guide to Perform Ram Navami Puja at Home

1. Preparing for the Puja

Cleanse the Space

Start by cleaning your house using water mixed with salt and alum, especially the area where you plan to set up the altar. Sprinkle Ganga Jal throughout the home to purify the environment.
A clean and calm space helps create a divine atmosphere for worship.

Personal Purification

Add rose water or rose petals to your bathing water. While bathing, chant this mantra:

“Om Ganga-cha Yamuna-chaiva Godavari Saraswati
Narmade Sindhu Kaveri Jale asmin sannidhim kuru”

Wear fresh, traditional clothes after the bath. The purity of the body reflects the purity of thoughts and intentions.

Gather Puja Items

You will need:

  • A small wooden chowki
  • Red cloth
  • Idols or pictures of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman
  • Diya (lamp), incense sticks, fresh flowers
  • Fruits, Tulsi leaves, Gangajal
  • Roli, Akshat (rice), Sandalwood paste
  • Panchamrit (mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar)
  • Sweets for prasad

2. Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

Sankalp (Resolve)

Sit before the altar, close your eyes, and take a heartfelt vow to perform the puja with sincerity. Chant the Sankalp:

“Shree Sita Rama Chandra preetyartham Rama Navami poojanam karishye.”
(I am performing the Ram Navami puja to please Shri Sita Ramachandra.)

Aachaman (Purification Ritual)

Sip a few drops of holy water while reciting:

  • Om Keshavaya Namah – sip a drop of water
  • Om Narayanaya Namah – sip again
  • Om Madhavaya Namah – sip once more

This symbolizes inner purification.

Abhishekam (Bathing the Deities)

If using metal idols, gently bathe them with water, then Panchamrit, and rinse again with clean water. This is a mark of reverence and purification.

Dress and Decorate the Deities

Apply roli and sandalwood paste on the idols’ foreheads. Offer fresh flowers and decorate the altar with garlands.

Lighting the Lamp and Incense

Light a diya and incense sticks to invoke divine presence and create a sacred atmosphere. The flame symbolizes light, knowledge, and the presence of the divine.

Naivedya (Offering Food)

Offer fruits, sweets, and sattvic (pure) foods to the deities as a gesture of devotion and gratitude.

Chanting: Ram Gayatri Mantra or Ek Shloki Ramayan

Recite either:

  • Ram Gayatri Mantra
“Om Dasharathaya Vidmahe Sitavallabhaya Dheemahi Tanno Ramah Prachodayat”
  • Ek Shloki Ramayan
(Condensed version of the Ramayana in one shloka)

Chant at least 11 times, ideally 108 times, to deepen the spiritual connection.

Aarti

Perform Ram Aarti by waving the lit lamp in a circular motion in front of the idols while singing the aarti. This is the emotional climax of the puja, expressing love and surrender.

Pradakshina and Namaskar

Walk around the altar (parikrama) and bow down in Namaskar, showing devotion and gratitude.

Distribute Prasad

Conclude the puja by distributing the prasad among family members, sharing the divine blessings.

The Road Ahead

Ram Navami is not just a religious observance but a spiritual reminder to embody the virtues of Lord Rama — patience, courage, humility, and unwavering faith. Performing this puja at home brings not only blessings but also a sense of peace, purpose, and divine presence that lingers long after the festival.
May this Ram Navami bring strength, harmony, and divine grace into your home and heart.
