Hey there,
10 years ago, The Quint began its journey of telling stories that matter. Some stories shook us, some sparked real change, and some have stayed with us long after the cameras stopped rolling. The issues we reported on years ago continue to shape the world around us, reminding us why independent journalism matters now more than ever.
To mark this milestone, we’re looking back at 10 powerful documentaries that have defined our journey over the years.
The first one takes us into the fascinating world of dubbing — how South Indian movies have taken over the Hindi-speaking market. We explored this in 2022, and three years later, it’s more relevant than ever. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films are making waves across India and beyond. According to the recent Ormax Media Box Office Report, Hindi cinema saw a decline in 2024, with collections dropping from ₹5,380 crore in 2023 to ₹4,679 crore. Interestingly, 31% of these earnings came from dubbed South Indian films.
But how does dubbing really work? How do voice artists match the emotions, tone and delivery of stars like Rajinikanth and Allu Arjun to bring them to life for an entirely new audience? And is dubbing an art form in itself, one that’s even harder than acting?
This is a story about voices you recognise but people you don’t see.
For the next 10 days, we’ll revisit one powerful documentary each day. These are some of the many stories we believed in, fought for, and poured our hearts into.
