The Tungal festival was inaugurated in Kotli, Mandi district, with a vibrant cultural procession showcasing traditional music and deep-rooted devotion. The festivities began in front of the Tehsil office, where blessings were sought from Rachhera, the revered deity of the Tungal region. The colourful procession, filled with dancing and singing locals, moved through Kotli Bazaar and concluded at the main event venue.
The formal inauguration was carried out by chief guest Lt Col Basant Singh Bhardwaj (retd), a Sena Medal recipient, who cut the ceremonial ribbon. Retired Principal Mukund Ram Sharma presided over the function. Students of Oxford School, Kotli, began the event with a graceful Saraswati Vandana, followed by the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the chief guest.
Lt Col Bhardwaj extended his best wishes to the Tungal Kala Manch and generously donated Rs 25,000 in support. Principal Mukund Ram Sharma also contributed Rs 11,000. Both dignitaries were warmly welcomed with traditional drums, music, and floral garlands.
The Tungal Kala Manch, led by founder Prashant Mohan, President Bhuvnesh Thakur, Secretary Pawan Kumar, and members Hari Singh, Chaman Lal, Arun Kumar, Parmanand, and Lachhman Das, honored the guests with shawls, caps, and mementos.
The event also celebrated and recognised the achievements of several distinguished individuals. These included Mahavir Chakra awardee Subedar Kashi Ram, Everest climber Captain Hoshiyar Singh, young entrepreneur Sakina Thakur, schoolchild savior Vidyasagar, social worker Girdhari Lal, and folk singer Sawani Devi. Each was felicitated for their exceptional contributions to society.
Social worker Girdhari Lal further supported the cause with a donation of Rs 11,000. The event witnessed active participation from over 30 women’s groups, transforming the festival into a grand celebration of local culture, talent and unity.
