Woman loses 3.5L to scam to ‘ward off black magic’

Mumbai: A 32-year-old Santacruz East resident fell victim to a Rs 3.5 lakh fraud after responding to an advertisement on Instagram claiming to resolve future and love-related problems. She transferred the money for performing rituals to counter alleged “black magic” performed on her boyfriend by another woman, before discovering it was a scam. She had initially reached out to a contact provided on Instagram.
The accused, Faisal Qureshi, solicited her and her boyfriend’s photos, birth dates, and a preliminary payment of Rs 251, assuring to address her problems. “The team is tracking down the internet protocol (IP) address of the fraudster to track his location. Meanwhile, the team is also trying to get details of the bank to which the victim has transferred money,” said a Vakola police officer. tnn
